Migraine is a reoccurring headache that affects either the front or one side of the head. It is usually accompanied by nauseous feeling lasting for a few house or in some cases for a few days. Migraine headache causes intense pain that can interfere with your everyday social, business or educational life.

Examples of migraine with aura include hemiplegic, ophthalmic, menstrual and ophthalmologic migraine.

  1. Hemiplegic Migraine: This type of migraine has symptoms such as paralysis of one side of the body. Forms of hemiplegic include familial hemiplegic migraine which occurs as a result of genetic disorder and sporadic hemiplegic migraine which has symptoms such as drowsiness, confusion but does not involve genes.
  2. Ophthalmic Migraine: This type of migraine has signs such as blindness of one eye lasting for a couple of hours.
  3. Opthalmoplegic Migraine: This type of migraine causes throbbing pain behind the eyes and weakness of the muscles of the eyes.

Migraine may be triggered by loud noise, bright light, menstrual period and stress such as relationship, social and physical stress.

Symptoms of Migraine
  1. Nauseous feeling
  2. Vomiting
  3. Excessive sensitivity to Light and sound
  4. Sweating and poor concentration
  5. Dizziness and visual disturbance such as blurry visions and blind spot

Natural Remedies for Migraine

A couple of drugs can be used to treat migraine; examples include imitrex, replex and aspirin. However, effective home remedies can be used which will work just fine without resorting to drugs. According to researchers, such drugs may have side effects such as stomach ulcer, risk of stroke and paralysis, heart attack. Some home remedies which could be used for treating Migraine include;

  1. Massage: This involves robbing or massaging the temples in a circular form with one or two fingers. This may lead to temporary relief from migraine, help you to sleep better and feel migraine less often. Massage can be done by one’s self or by another person either while standing or lying down.
  2. Headache- relieving stretches: This type of stretches help to relax the muscles of your head. It involves turning your head and neck in a particular way or making different moves with your head. Start by keeping your body straight and firm, and then move your chin upward, forward and towards your shoulder with your eyes open to prevent you from feeling dizzy. You could also do other stretches like the shoulder shrug.
  3. Aerobics/exercises: Exercising for more than 75 minutes per week is also a very good remedy for migraine especially for those who do not want to be confined to medications. Exercises such as swimming, biking and brisk walking help to reduce tension and help relax the brain muscles in order to prevent it from overreacting. When you exercise, hormones such as Endorphilis which acts as a sedative and anti-depressant are released into the body and as a result, the body is relaxed. Ensure that these exercises are done moderately because if excessively done, it can trigger migraine.
  4. Magnesium: Deficiency of magnesium in body is also a major cause of migraine, therefore taking dietary supplements or taking food rich in magnesium such as pumpkin seed, sesame seed, spinach, soy beans etc. can help relax the brain muscles and can reduce or prevents migraine.
  5. Meditation: Meditation is a means of distracting one’s self from the pain throbbing through the body especially in the head as in the case of migraine. There are two types of mediation namely; spiritual meditation and the secular mediation. Studies have shown that spiritual meditation yields more result than secular meditation, because it is more effective in taking the mind off pain and also increases level of tolerance. Meditating for at least 20 minutes per day helps to master the act of pain tolerance.
  6. Relaxation: relaxation event such as listening to music, watching a movie, sightseeing, deep breathing help to solve the problem of migraine. Lie on your back as still as possible, keep your mind from wandering around, then start breathing in and out until you feel the muscles in your head relax.
  7. Ice or heat: This method involves packing an ice bag, and applying the ice bag or heat to the back of your neck or to your temple. The effect of the ice helps to dull the sensation of pain, and prevents inflammation of the muscles of the brain and also produces a soothing relief.
  8. Turn all light and sound off: Since excessive light and loud sounds are one of the triggers of migraine, turning off all light and sound and lying in a dark room helps to relax the nerves in the brain.
  9. Rest well: Ensure that you have regular and consistent sleeping hours, either during the day or at night. Also, ensure that nothing interferes with your night sleep and minimize distractions when you are about to sleep, by making sure the door to your bedroom is well locked and your television is turned off.
  10. Maintain a good eating habit: It is very important for you to eat regularly. Avoid skipping meals, eat balanced diet and also avoid foods that trigger migraine such as alcohol or coffee. You should also try to avoid alcohol that gives you headache within 8 hours of taking it. Most importantly, eat a lot of fruit such as oranges, strawberries and take a lot of water.
  11. Acupuncture: According to research, acupuncture is one of the effective ways of treating migraine. Studies have shown that acupuncture is more effective than some drugs available for treatment of migraine and has reduced risk or side effect. It involves inserting tiny needles in some strategic places under the skin in order to realign the flow of energy in the body.
  12. Yoga: Yoga is a combination of physical and mental and breathing exercises to achieve balancing of the mind and enhance relaxation. There are different poses of yoga such as half-moon, crescent pose, etc. Any of these poses will help relax the mind and prevent migraine.
