We want our hoverboards. We want our jetpacks. We're not taking no for an answer. How about maybe? The folks at California-based Hoverboard Technologies have come out with a skateboard that works kind of like a Segway and feels something like a hoverboard.

The electric-powered board has one central wheel — as opposed to four or even two, like other skateboards — that reacts to subtle tilting from the rider.

A motor inside the board gives it a speed up to 16 miles per hour and a gyroscope helps the rider steer and maintain balance.

A full battery charge will give the rider a range of 12 miles.

Unlike the Segway, which uses a similar gyroscope technology and can be ridden without much effort, the Hoverboard requires some practice. This is not a step-on-and-go mobility device.

In an interview with TechCrunch reporter Josh Constine, Hoverboard Technologies developer Robert Bigler said that although the board looks easy to ride, it’s an earned experience, just like learning how to snowboard or waterski on one ski.

But once you get the hang of it, says Bigler, it’s an amazing feeling and you might just believe you’re floating on air.

Bigler said he plans to launch a Kickstarter on September 17 to fund development. Prices are expected to start at $4,000.
